When Diane Mercer was young, she lived in a haunted house. Now she's dying of cancer, and she heads back to that house, determined to discover once and for all whether the ghosts were real.

As Diane explores the house where she grew up, her son explores the yard and the forest. Troubled by glimpses of a strange young girl, Daniel is drawn to the little ash house in the garden, and he soon starts to notice mysterious rasping coughs in the middle of the night.
