Many years ago, vampires were a powerful and respected species. Today, only one remains, living in the shadows and avoiding others.

After she's nearly killed by a group of local thugs, Sophie Hart finds herself saved by a mysterious stranger. Waking up in an underground chamber, she discovers that Patrick – her rescuer – is the last vampire. Unable or unwilling to talk, he rebuffs her attempts at friendship, but she soon learns that he's guarding a dangerous secret.

Once she's part of Patrick's world, Sophie quickly discovers that he's not the only danger on the streets. She encounters ghosts, werewolves and other strange creatures, and eventually she's transported to the ancient home of the vampires. At first she assumes that she's merely been caught up in all this madness by pure chance, but she gradually comes to understand that a darker force might be at work, one that brought her together with Patrick for one very specific purpose.

What really happened to the other vampires? Why does Patrick never say a word? And what will happen on the day when he eventually speaks again?
