After being brutally murdered by her own father, Beth Keneally wakes up on the edge of town. She's a ghost now, but her father is still on the loose and Beth's little sister Elise is his next target. As she tries to find a way to save Elise, Beth has to come to terms with her newfound ghostly status, and to do that she's going to need the help of some of the town's other undead souls.

Meanwhile, God and Satan arrive in the same Texas location, determined to finally settle an old bet. Each wiping their memories, they assume the lives of ordinary citizens so that they can find out what it means to be human. They quickly discover, however, that their bet has unintended consequences that could lead to the end of the world.

Soon, Beth and her new ghostly friends find themselves drawn into an almighty battle between the forces of good and evil. Can Beth save her sister, and even if she does, is the world doomed?
