If you liked Stephen by Amy Cross and you’re not sure what to read next, here are some suggestions…

ASYLUM (2012)
After murdering her brother, Annie Radford is sent to a psychiatric hospital filled with ghosts, murderers, nuns and psychopaths.

It’s like Stephen but… One of the first Amy Cross horror novels, Asylum is MUCH longer and has some pretty freaky moments. If you like it, there are also two sequels that came out a few years later.

THE SOUL AUCTION (2017)
Thirty years after her mother died, Alice arrives in a small coastal town to figure out what really happened. But can she handle the horrific truth?

It’s like Stephen but… While there’s not as much gruesome action, The Soul Auction features some spooky scenes plus a few hints at the more fantasy-focused Amy Cross world.

THE NURSE (2016)
Blind and entirely relying on her mother, a young girl moves into a mysterious old house. But does the ghost of a deadly former occupant linger in the shadows?

It’s like Stephen but… The Nurse starts out as a ghost story before changing to become something even darker. There’s a pretty strange twist that (hopefully) you won’t see coming until it slaps you in the face.

WAX (2022)
Originally published as a serial, Wax is now available in this collected edition. Searching for her long-lost mother, Rachel makes a disturbing discovery.

It’s like Stephen but… Long and sprawling, Wax is a haunted house story with a difference. The main character soon finds out that sometimes it’s best not to find the one thing you’ve been looking for.

THE BLOOD HOUSE (2016)
A young girl moves with her family to a mysterious old house in the middle of nowhere. She soon learns that this house is actually a twisted trap.

It’s like Stephen but… The Blood House features a lot more bloody physical horror, with body parts flying at various points. The main character’s final escape attempt is particularly memorable.

B&B (2016)
Amy asked for this book to be included in the list. It’s one of her weirdest, featuring bandaged women, deadly plants and a snowbound murderer.

It’s like Stephen but… This is arguably the strangest Amy Cross novel so far. The plot wraps around itself in surprising ways as the main character tries to work out what exactly is going on.
