After five years, the town of Steadfall is slowly getting stronger. As she struggles to retain control, however, Asher finds that her authority is starting to fade. And then, just as all seems lost, three strangers arrive and offer their help. One in particular, Harold, seems to know exactly what Steadfall – and Asher – need the most.

Meanwhile, Iris sets out to explore the island. Searching for a supposedly long-lost town, one that pre-dates Steadfall, she comes face-to-face with a startling reminder of the island's savagery. Soon the entire island is on the brink of war, but Asher's ability to fight is compromised as she starts to receive terrifying glimpses of an old life that was wiped from her mind.
