On a seemingly ordinary September day, the entire population of the United States vanishes. In the blink of an eye, 300 million people are gone, leaving behind only empty streets and buildings.

As governments around the world try to work out what has happened, a powerful corporation sends a small team to investigate. As soon as they arrive, however, Dr. Stef Grant and her colleagues discover that a giant cover-up operation is in full swing. Someone knows what happened to all those people, and evidence soon emerges that somebody else made a last-ditch attempt to stop the disaster.

Who is really behind the devastating attack that has left the United States abandoned? Who left behind a series of eerie messages, warning of the catastrophe? And how is all of this connected to the mysterious Shades?
